We’re always try to find ways to create colour in the gardening during the winter and heucheras have become a firm favourite. Nurseries such as Heucheraholics (https://www.heucheraholics.co.uk) and Plantagogo (https://www.plantagogo.com) have countless varieties of these wonderful plants with richly-coloured and pattered leaves unrivalled by any other genus.
They grow well on our fertile, silty soil here at Farley Hill Place Gardens, but are suited to all sorts of conditions as long as they’re not on waterlogged clay or thin, acid sand. We find the foliage colours are best when grown in full sun, though they will also thrive in shade, and relish being grown in containers.
We’ll be lifting and dividing some of our existing clumps in the spring – when they’ll re-establish quickly – to propagate more of these wonderful plants. And we may even splash out on a few different and unusual varieties this year… well, like all good gardeners, we can ALWAYS find space for new plants!
